At 5 am in the morning, I and my fellow Aikido practitioners arrived at Haneda International Airport in Japan. Excited to start our training, we made our way straight to the Hombu Dojo (The Headquarters). Our first training session of the day, led by Irie Yoshinobu Shihan (入江 嘉信), began promptly at 8 am.
The high summer temperatures in Japan can reach up to 40 degrees, and the crowded dojo added even more heat. Before we knew it, an hour of intensive training had passed, and we returned to our hotel under the warm sun. After a quick break, we returned to the headquarters dojo at 3 pm for a training session led by Seki Shoji Shihan (関 昭二), followed by the final session of the day, led by the head of the Hombu dojo (dojo-cho), Ueshiba Mitsuteru (植芝 充央), at 5:30 pm.
The first day of training passed quickly. After three training sessions led by different Senseis, we returned to the hotel exhausted but ready for the next day's classes led by Sasaki Teiju Shihan (佐々木 貞樹), Kobayashi Yukimitsu Shihan (小林 幸光) and Sugawara Shigeru Shihan (菅原 繁).
Reflecting on my experiences at the Hombu dojo, I have gained a lot. Although each Sensei had their own unique teaching methods, their movements were clear and easy to understand. Whenever I had a question, the Senseis were always ready to explain and demonstrate with a friendly attitude. As a serious practitioner, I believe it is important to focus and learn humbly from the Senseis, and to make an effort to improve on any areas they point out. Maintaining a positive learning attitude is crucial in Aikido.
Additionally, although the Senseis taught different techniques, the importance of focusing on our own axis was emphasized throughout. This, I believe, is a fundamental principle of Aikido. During several training sessions, I was able to easily perform techniques that I had previously struggled with, simply by adjusting my movements or direction. This showed me that paying attention to the details of each technique can make them more effective and efficient.
During these three valuable Aikido training sessions, I had the opportunity to meet many senior Aikido practitioners. They were all extremely friendly, even though I was a beginner with limited knowledge of the techniques. They patiently allowed me to practice and encouraged me every step of the way.
The most memorable experience for me was during Sensei Sugawara Shihan’s second training session, where we had a free technique session. This session tested our reaction time and experience as the receiving person. At first, I was nervous and gave an improper response, but as I tried it more times, I realized that by persevering, even if I didn't know my partner's next move, I could successfully complete a full technique with them. I am grateful for this valuable experience and for the kindness and encouragement of all the senior practitioners. I can't wait to return to the Hombu dojo and have more new experiences in the future!
